esCarpade 2014 Day 4 - Tanunda (Barossa Valley) Rest Day

So...  Rest Day in the Barossa Valley!!  Are the boys going on a winery tour?  No...  They are working on Booger Mobile!!

But first, lending a helping hand to Fred Flintstone with a jump start!!

Next up, installing a direct feed from the battery to the coil - the issue was suggested to be the lack of a full 12 volt feed at the coil...

A test drive found this didn't fix the problem, however it was decided to rewire it anyway, just to be on the safe side.

Lots of wiring...

Under the dash to replace the switch...

None of that worked either, so it was suggested that a replacement coil, rotor button and coil lead was the way to go...

The coil was also moved away from the engine to attempt to stop it from getting so hot - the theory being that the coil was getting so hot, it was overheating and failing.

This didn't fix the problem either...  Damian took Jon Jag out for a drive and he decided that it felt more like a fuel problem than an electrical problem...

So after replacing the distributor, ignition wiring, starter relay, rotor button, coil, coil lead and Damian's sanity, it was decided that throwing some liquid awesomeness into the fuel tank to try to clean out any rubbish in there was the go...

In the mean time, Damian decided that pulling the carby apart was the next logical place to look...

There was some suggestion that the fuel was getting too hot in there, but after consulting with a local Ford expert, this was discounted...

Off came the carby...

Damn things are hard to reach!!

Gooooooooooone!!

Then the carby was checked for grunge, and the needle and seat were removed and cleaned...  Damian thought he spotted a small bit of crap in the seat, but wasn't positive...

After putting the carby back together, a small test drive was done - about 30km or so...  The issue didn't arise again, however the previous test drive required about 50km to replicate the issue...

The boys decided that the best option was to drive the bitumen in the morning (after a school visit), then if Booger Mobile doesn't play up like a 2 bob watch, they will head onto the dirt after lunch, keep their fingers crossed and hope for the best!!

The dinner was at a local venue called "The Clubhouse".  Angus and Damian shared a bottle of their wine (so they can say that they actually had some wine while in the Barossa)...  Shiraz was pretty good!!

 See...

So, to recap...  None of the stuff that was replaced on Booger Mobile appeared to have rectified the issue...  Throwing some crap-cleaner into the fuel will hopefully clean out any crap in the fuel, and cleaning out the carby will hopefully sort it all out.

Damian and Angus aren't filled with confidence about it all, and will drive the bitumen in the morning (after the school visit).  If Booger Mobile goes alright, it will be back onto the dirt... if it doesn't it will be taken out to pasture and shot!!

Alright, probably not that drastic, but it feels that way at times!!

Stay tuned, and say a few kind words to the deity of your choice for Booger Mobile to stop causing Damian and Angus so much grief!!

  2. You two are having a horrid run this time around! And that must be why you didn't hug Maggie Beer for me! I hope that this mornings test run goes well so that you can get back on the interesting tracks. Praying to God and having some words with him about giving you such a rough time. Xoxo

  3. Just look at it this way ....now you know for certain what the carby looks like and the coil, distributor etc. Keep your chin up and remember "Laughter is the Best Medicine"
